Then at the top, the psychologist Carl Jung, founder of depth psychology and the serious study of images, fairytales, psychological types, and other topics that bear his stamp.

Next is Wolfgang Pauli, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who was fascinated with his own dreams and used them as a way to expand his consciousness and understand his “whole” self better. Jung and Pauli exchanged thoughts, going into quantum physics and depth psychology together in a fascinating correspondence.

Pauli thought he dreamed for collective reasons as well as personal – that his dreams were representative of archetypes and that his exploration of them with Jung helped society. Jung thought the same and discussed these dreams in books, without identifying Pauli. The number 137 haunted Pauli, being mysteriously associated with his scientific studies and himself personally. Pauli was so synchronistic that the moment he realized he was in hospital number 137, though he was only 58 years old, he felt sure he would never leave there alive.

Indeed, that was the room in which he died. As Wikipedia puts it, “In 1958, Pauli was awarded the Max Planck medal. In that same year, he fell ill with pancreatic cancer. When his last assistant, Charles Enz, visited him at the Rotkreuz hospital in Zurich, Pauli asked him: “Did you see the room number?” It was number 137. Throughout his life, Pauli had been preoccupied with the question of why the fine structure constant, a dimensionless fundamental constant, has a value nearly equal to 1/137. Pauli died in that room on 15 December 1958.”

Synopsis: Keep This Quiet! III – Initiations begins in the C. G. Jung Institute Zurich, where Margaret was enrolled in 1984. She is headed for a big initiation there, which she narrates for us – showing how initiations are life-transforming. Notably, she also dives into the debate between physicist Wolfgang Pauli and psychiatrist Carl Jung about how science/matter and psyche/spirit/synchronicity emerge from a unified psychophysical realm. Dreams lend assistance, as do the brilliant Jung-Pauli letters. Exercises in the back offer practical help in how to work with energy.

Critique: This is the third and highly recommended title in Margaret Harrell’s outstanding Keep This Quiet! autobiographical series. A fascinating and exceptionally well written personal story, Keep This Quiet! III: Initiations is as informative as it is entertaining and will be especially interesting to students of Jungian psychology and metaphysics. Keep This Quiet! III: Initiations is very highly recommended for both community and academic library collections. Also exceptionally commended are the first two volumes in this outstanding series: Keep This Quiet! In Brahmanada: Sound, Mantra and Power, Guruji clearly explains how chanting works within us and our environment: The vibrations, the waves of sound, first affect the Akash (Ether), then the causal body, then it creates an equal effect upon the subtle and gross. When, by the effect of sound, joy is enhanced, then all kinds of tasks become pleasurable, and everything can be accomplished in a better way. It is seen that if melodious music is played while cows are being milked, their quantity is increased. By the sound of music the cobra becomes calm. Deer are tamed by the sound of music. When sound is created, if it is full of feeling, then its effect is more powerful.

The mind does not wander, once it has become engrossed in the sound. Just as water mixes in milk, so does the mind mix with the sound which becomes one with the chittakash (space in the mind).

When you follow your intuition, you have more energy moving through you. You are in the flow, you feel alive! When you don’t follow your intuition, life can become a struggle, like swimming against the tide. You can train your intellect to listen to your intuitive knowingness, and learn not to ignore, discount, or contradict the intuitive feelings you are getting. You can trust your own inner knowingness, and make yourself the authority of what is right for you.

This course here in Raleigh with me will be starting in mid-October. Intuition is something everyone has – men and women, children, even animals. Sometimes I’d swear my dog is using it. Or he’s studied me so well he appears to be. Make a comment if you want to share an intuition you’ve followed up on and how it worked. Here’s a related observation on animal intuition:

Intuition is founded in part on astute observation—something animals are much  better at than humans. In the deadly tsunami that swept the coasts around the  Indian Ocean in 2004, for instance, few wild animals were killed. Researchers  theorize that they were tipped off by sound waves or ground vibrations and ran  for higher ground. There’s evidence that humans can sense these types of cues,  too, but we’re usually too busy paying attention to other, noisier stimuli to  notice.
